Can my landlord refuse my rent check if it's written for TOO MUCH?

I live in San Francisco, CA. I was out of town during the recent holiday and so mailed my rent check in from afar. I didn't have any online access and so couldn't verify the correct amount, so to be safe I purposely wrote the check for too much. My landlord just notified me the night before rent is due or late payment is charged (making it impossible for me to get a replacement check to her in time) that she's refusing my check because it's the for the wrong amount. Can she do this? Doesn't she have to accept the check if it's for at least the required amount?
