Can anyone help me out on the laws regarding lockers?

I mean if someone is laid off can the company throw your personal belonging out without giving you a chance to collect them? Can you sue for lost items? I worked in a hotel whereby after being laid off I went to HR to pick up my stuff but a lot of stuff missing. Thanks for you replies.
